The Island

Before I (Ingrid) was born my parents bought these islands in the Vats fjord, and soon connected them together with a dam. This has been our family holiday home ever since, and I cannot recall a summer not spent out here.

Endless days swimming, fishing and going on walks discovering all kinds of hidden treasures and spying on all the different birds and small animals that lived there.

Now it is our daughter Emma, and her friends, who will build their childhood memories here!

One morning I woke up and found that Emma was not in her bed. Looking out the window of the lodge I found her sitting in her small chair on the pier. Just being quiet and enjoying life - so the view even gets to a six year old!

Luckily I managed to capture the moment on film.

There is always plenty of things to do out here, and now the trees my parents planted the year before I was born have grown so much that we have to start cutting some down.

We try to save this job for winter weekends when the temperature is more agreable to lumberjacking, but we use the logs for making bonfires in summer as well. Perfect for toasting marsmellows.

I must have spent half my childhood summers trying to catch the small crabs down by the dam. Cracking open blue mussels for bait, and then waiting for the small shrimp and crabs to start their feast.

Now it is Emmas turn and she heads down to the pond with her bucket and crabnet as soon as we land.

Some days she even has a tail of puppies tagging along!

We always bring as many dogs as we can, and they enjoy the freedom immensely!

Funnily enough the "first timers" are quite worried when they discover that they will not be called inside or into a kennel run, but can roam free all day if they want.

But that feeling tend to pass quickly!

Our spring and summer litters are the lucky ones and get to come along as well, I guess the photos below speak volumes about how much fun they have out there.

Waiting for the next ship to come in....

A bed of seaweed!

The cottage was buildt in the late 60s and invites to the simple life. No running water and a wood fire for heat.

My favourite idea of a retreat now as an adult is to go here by myself for a weekend - bringing lots of dogs, good books and a bottle of wine for the evenings.

We try to run our own dogs together as one "pack", so the adult males we get to host for a while misses out on most of our long daily walks at home because they are outsiders. I make it up to them by letting them come to the island to have days of absolute freedom, and boy do they love it.

TM especially loved just MY chair by the window, and jumped in even if I just got up to get a drink of water...

In TMs words " this is as good as its gets!"
